🧈✨The Fancy Mom’s Homemade Southern Buttermilk Biscuits 🧈💕✨

A little Southern love from The Fancy Mom! 💕✨
Nothing makes me happier than waking up early and preparing a homemade breakfast for my babies. These buttery, flaky biscuits are one of those simple homemade recipes that make breakfast feel extra special. Because sometimes it's the little things, like a warm biscuit straight from the oven, that make a house feel like home. 🧈💕

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Ap Flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 4 tbsp shortening butter flavor cold more for greasing skillet
  • 4 Tbsp butter cold
  • heavy whipping cream for topping
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F. grease a cast-iron skillet.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and granulated sugar until everything is evenly combined.
  • Add your cold butter-flavored shortening and 4 tablespoons of cold unsalted butter to the flour mixture.
Using a pastry cutter, fork.. work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with small pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  • Pour in 1 cup of cold buttermilk and gently stir until a shaggy dough begins to form.
The dough should be soft and slightly sticky. Do not over-mix
  • Lightly flour your work surface and transfer the biscuit dough onto it.
Gently pat the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.
Fold the dough into thirds, like paper Gently flatten it again and repeat this process about 2–3 times.
  • Gently pat the dough to approximately 1 inch thick.
Using a biscuit cutter, or cup press straight down into the dough without twisting.
Place the biscuits on your prepared  cast-iron skillet. For softer sides, arrange them so they are just touching.
  • Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the tops of your biscuits with heavy whipping cream.
This helps create a beautiful golden-brown finish while adding a little extra richness.
  • Place the biscuits in your preheated oven and bake at 425°F for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until they have risen beautifully and the tops are golden brown.
  • Once the biscuits come out of the oven, immediately brush the tops with melted unsalted butter.
    Serve warm and enjoy!

💕 The Fancy Mom Tips

  • Cold ingredients are everything! Make sure your butter, shortening, and buttermilk stay cold until you're ready to use them. This helps create tender, flaky biscuits.
  • Don't overwork your dough! The more you handle biscuit dough, the tougher your biscuits can become. Mix just until everything comes together.
  • Fold for those beautiful layers! Folding the dough 2–3 times creates those gorgeous flaky layers that pull apart when your biscuits are warm.
  • Never twist your biscuit cutter! Press straight down and lift straight up. Twisting can seal the edges and prevent your biscuits from rising properly.
  • Heavy whipping cream is the secret to beautiful tops! Brush a thin layer over each biscuit before baking for a rich, golden finish.
  • Don't skip the melted butter! As soon as your biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter for that extra buttery Southern goodness.
  • Make them your own! Serve these biscuits with homemade honey butter, your favorite jam, sausage gravy, or even crispy chicken for a delicious Southern breakfast.
  • You don't have to use a cast-iron skilled any baking dish will do.
